A few year’s ago i was inspired by a group of comic artists that reunite every now and then to have a few drinks, shoot the shit, talk shop and draw. The call themselves The Original Drink and Draw Social Club.

Yearning to do cool things like that while stuck here in Panama, i decided to organize and run my own version of the Drink ‘N Draw. I would gather all those who wanted to drop by and have a drink… and draw! Every month, on the last Wednesday of the month i would put forth the call to the masses, for all who wanted to show up, to come over to -the now  long gone, but never forgotten- Musa Del Chai.

Once there i would urge the attendees to sample the cuisine, and get some drinks. Then i would put forth a concept. This concept would be only one word, and they would develop that concept as they saw fit. They could draw it, paint it, dance it, write it, photograph it, stick in a stew… you name it. The idea is to flex your creative muscle.

Then a combination of things -lack of a place to gather, me leaving the country, etc etc etc- saw this land bereft of them gatherings for a while.

But fear no more! Starting this last January, the PANAMA DRINK ‘N DRAW is back in full swing!

This time we placed the call and asked you to join us at EL APARTAMENTO. People promptly started showing up and i released into the masses the first concept: “GORGOJO” -a beetle that lives in rice, here in Panama.

It was then that my friend Henry came by and said that the word in itself sounded like the name of a Norwegian Black Death Metal band… and that was the direction I took, hence the metal looking logo at the top of this post.

After a while -and after a few beers- the second concept was released: “RASPA’O!” -a shaced ice snow cone and a play on words on a small injury, like a scraped knee if you will.

Those gathered there were having a blast. All tables and usable surfaces of the bar were crowded with people drawing.

A dude walked in and said out loud: “Fuck! I came here to get DRUNK! And all I see is people doing HOMEWORK? What the FUCK is going on here!” -He then promptly, shambled to the bar and got himself some drinks and faded into the night.

Anyhow, feel free to check out what some of the attendees did. Just CLICK HERE for a INSTAGRAM GALLERY of pictures tagged with the hashtag #PTYDnD.
